Common Ridings

Come and experience the sense of community in the South of Scotland at the unique traditions of the Common Ridings. These spectacular riding festivals are celebrated annually in many Border towns and date from past times when Border territories were disputed lands, which had to be defended.

From the end of April until August the age-old traditions of the Common Ridings are re-enacted in the local Border towns celebrating a heritage of horsemanship.  These are amongst the largest mounted equestrian gatherings in Europe and provide a colourful spectacle for the visitor.

Riding the boundaries of the common land at a fast pace amongst a cavalcade of up to 300 fellow riders is an exhilarating experience.  Please click on the ‘Event Listings’ link to the left to find out when the Common Ridings take place and see below for details on where you can hire a horse for the day.
